Desert

Welcome to Desert Class

All of the Year 6 children are in Desert Class. The main class teacher is Mrs Vail (who works in school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Mrs Higgs teaches in Desert Class on Thursdays. On Fridays, Mr Harris and Mrs Bray teach the class.

Summer Term 1

The Year 6s have been superstars this week and focussed really well in their tests. I am so proud of all of them! The breakfasts helped them to look forward to coming to school in the morning and they had great fun in the afternoons. They took part in outdoor learning, visited the Recreation Ground, played Capture the Flag, baked cookies, sat around the firepit and enjoyed marshmallows!

Spring Term 2

Art – Inuit Printing

Home Learning Projects

PE Lessons – Golf

Outdoor climbing

Desert Class had another exciting afternoon of climbing at Bryanston.  This time they got to experience outdoor climbing using harnesses and ropes.  They were asked to channel any nerves they might have had into challenging themselves and they definitely did that! They did a fantastic job of supporting each other by belaying and controlling the ropes.  A huge thank you to Mr Curry and his team at Bryanston.

World Book Day 2026

Today we had a wonderful time doing lots of book-related activities which also included an online BBC World Book Day Lesson. The children in Desert have also taken part in a competition for National Book Tokens so fingers crossed we might have a lucky winner!

Maths Unit – percentages, fractions and decimals

We had a practical first lesson using Numicon. The children showed a great understanding and were able to convert between percentages, fractions and decimals.

Book Week

The whole school studied ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. We enjoyed inventing our own wild things, writing about them and creating them.

Science – Electrical Circuits

The children have enjoyed exploring circuits and adding in different components. They have been learning how to draw them using the correct symbols.

PE – Hockey

The Year 6s have enjoyed their hockey lessons. They have been practising dribbling skills, keeping possession of the ball, push passes and stopping the ball.

Maths – Algebra

We had a great practical maths lesson to introduce the concept of algebra.

Music – Creative Composition

The children have all loved composing music  to play along with next on glockenspiels to our song ‘Disco Fever’. It uses just 3 notes in the C major scale and they all sound fantastic!

DT – Food for Life

We thoroughly enjoyed making some fresh meals: brocolli and cheese soup; carrot and parsnip soup; and tomato pasta sauce.

The children had a great time making bread and of course sampling it once it was cooked. They compared the taste, smell, texture and ingredients to shop bread and were amazed how different they were.

Making Christingles and Reflection

On the last day of term the children all made a Christingle and thought about the true meaning of Christmas; reflecting on the themes of Hope, Peace, Love and Joy.

Decorating Gingerbread

Our Year 6s had great fun decorating and then of course eating their gingerbread.

Art Topic – Trailblazers

The children learnt about significant black artists – some from the past and some current. They then choose one artist to focus on and create a piece in the same style.

Science Topic – Circulatory System

Year 6s investigated the effect of exercise on their heart rate. It was a great session and some of them made accurate predictions.

Puzzle Mindfulness

Our Year 6s have been enjoying the challenge of completing puzzles.

Climbing at Bryanston

Desert Class had a fantastic afternoon climbing at Bryanston.  Everyone did so well and challenged themselves to do something they hadn’t done before.  A huge thank you to Mr Curry who not only organised such a fun session, but also made sure we got there and back in the minibus.

Outdoor Learning

Year 6s had great fun den building and then warming up with a hot chocolate afterwards.

Science Topic – Circulatory System

The children had a practical, hands-on lesson this week and had the chance to handle sheep’s hearts, cow’s hearts as well as the trachea and lungs. They were able to identify the atrium, ventricles, aorta and other blood vessels in the heart. The size of the organs was fascinating. We couldn’t believe how big a cow’s heart was!
