Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Children have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special education provision to be made for them.  They have a learning difficulty if they;

  • find it more difficult to learn than the majority of children their own age
  • have a disability which stops them from making full use of the educational facilities provided for the children of the same age in school

Shillingstone CE Primary School has a SENDCo – Mrs Jayne Cottingham.  We also have a designated governor for SEND – Mrs Sharon Proyer. They can both be contacted via the school office.

ELSA

The ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) intervention is provided at Shillingstone Primary School and helps to support the emotional needs of children in school. We have training teaching assistants to develop and deliver individualised support programmes to meet the emotional needs of identified children. It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

Our ELSA TAs have had the following training and support:

·         attended a full ELSA training course delivered by one or more fully qualified educational psychologists;

·         regularly attend half-termly supervision in small groups, led by a qualified educational psychologist

·         are currently delivering bespoke programmes of support to individual children and sometimes small groups.
