Topic Learning – Dynamic Dynasties

We start this year with a history unit about the ancient Chinese dynasties. We will be focusing our learning on the Shang dynasty and understanding the impact they have made to not only Chinese culture, but other cultures around the world.

Our class novel this term is called “Bronze and Sunflower” and it is about an only child called Sunflower. The book has many themes including family and poverty.

Below you will find the knowledge organisers for our topic unit for this half term and our class novel:

Spring Term Week 7 (Beginning 19th January 2024)

This week, the children were given the fantastic opportunity to be a part of a Twin Coding Robotics Workshop led by Shaftsbury High School. The Computing Lead from Shaftsbury led a workshop for our class where they created their own autonomous cars and used iPads to code where the car was heading. This lead to an exciting race at the end of the session! The children loved it so much that they have repeatedly asked me for further computing workshops in the future.

Spring Term Week 3 (Beginning 15th January 2024)

This week, the children created their own pneumatic machines from the “Moving Mechanisms” DT unit. The class brought in materials from home to create fantastic and unique machines!

Spring Term Week 2 (Beginning 8th January 2024)

This week, we have started our new DT unit called “Moving Mechanisms” where the children have been learning about air pressure and how it is used in pneumatic systems. The class then tested, using balloons, squeezy bottles and books, to visually see how these systems work. Later in the week, the children will be constructing their own pneumatic machines to be able to lift small objects above the ground.

Autumn Term Week 12 (Beginning 27th November 2023)

This week, the Year 5’s went on their residential visit to Leeson House! They were fortunate enough to do a variety of different activities such as: Night orienteering, Studland beach study, animal tracking and the list goes on and on! The children were absolutely amazing throughout the entire trip and I am so proud of them for representing the school in a positive light. They will be having an assembly in Week 14 where they will go into more detail about their trip and share more photos.

Autumn Term week 11 (Beginning 20th November 2023)

This afternoon, the children presented their fantastic science projects to the rest of the class! They were amazing and really showed how passionate they were about their chosen topics. Well done to all the children as they were so nervous and worried about presenting but they all did so well!

Autumn Term Week 7 (beginning 16th October 2023)

In Art this week, Ocean class have been looking at Taotie artwork (see knowledge organiser for further information) and have had a go at different casting techniques. These include paper casting, silicone casting and clay casting. The children will then be given the opportunity to paint one of their castings later on this week and will be able to take them home.

In writing today, Ocean Class created a life cycle map going into further detail about the life of the Emperor Penguin. They then conducted an experiment to understand why Emperor Penguins have blubber using bags with lard in (to mimic blubber)  and cold (ish) water. They concluded that having a thick layer of blubber can be used to ensure the Emperor Penguins survive through the harshest of weathers in the Antarctic by keeping them as warm as possible.

Autumn Term Week 6 (beginning 9th October 2023)

In Writing today, Ocean Class were asked to create a drama piece about the life cycle of the Emperor Penguin to help extend their understanding of the animal. This is to prepare them for when they start writing their Non-chronological reports over the coming weeks.

Class Trip

The children in Ocean Class had a fantastic time at the Dorset Adventure Park where they completed the mud trail. Some were a little nervous to begin with but they soon got stuck in and had a fantastic time!

Week 5 (beginning 3rd July 2023)

Year 4s had a wonderful time at SNHS doing a variety of activities including Science (a chromatography investigation), Drama , History and Orienteering. They were very excited on their return to share their day’s activities with the Year 3s.

Year 3s spent Monday doing a fun Art Day linked to their topic. They learnt about Statues, Statuettes and Figurines. As well as drawing each other, doing a Maths related measuring task and learning about ancient civilisations, they made their on clay sculptures based on the idea of Ancient Sumer figures. This included making an armature (a wire structure) and a clay slip to help join pieces of clay together.

Week 4 (beginning Monday 26th June 2023)

This week our topic was Islamic Art. The children looked at geometric patterns before creating their own using a compass and ruler which was very difficult! They created their own star patterns and then ended the topic by creating a relief pattern on clay.

Week 3 (beginning Monday 19th June 2023)

The children have worked incredibly hard during their assessments this week. On Friday, they then enjoyed a well earned reward. They were able to use fabric paints to decorate items of clothing and watched a film.

Week 2 (beginning Monday 12th June 2023)

This week the children have been learning about electricity. They found out about electrical conductors and what makes a good conductor. They also made their own circuits which they really enjoyed!

Week 1 (beginning Monday 5th June 2023)

Our project this week focussed on the patterns found on different animals. The children enjoyed learning how to draw different animals using shapes before creating their own tile based on a peacock feather.
