PSHE

PSHE – SCARF

Intent

At Shillingstone School, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

We deliver PSHE using the SCARF Programme. We believe this offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

Implementation

The SCARF scheme is a spiral, progressive scheme of work, and aims to prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.  In addition to Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of Sex Education which is covered in our Science Curriculum. The Sex Education aspects of PSHE are also taught through ‘SCARF’.

PSHE is taught through the SCARF six half termly themes with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level). We have a 2 year rolling programme, where the children are taught alternating year group units . For example, year R/1 will learn through the year 1 unit in cycle A and then the Reception unit cycle B.
